Barry Williams joined Ramboll in 2006, becoming Principal Engineer in 2014. He is currently Mersey Gateway Technical and Project Team Scheme Consultant.

Barry’s wide ranging design, project management and site management experience has been built up within the highways sector, having worked in the design office and on site for the contractors’ and designers’ teams, fulfilling highway and highway structures design project/ construction management and designers site liaison roles.

His wider experience covers a broad section of civil engineering works such as earthworks, drainage, pavement, utilities, signs and road markings, lighting and retaining walls including reinforced earth and anchors. He has also gained extensive knowledge of setting up and operating/auditing quality assurance systems.

Projects have included new roads in environmentally sensitive areas, motorway improvement and re-surfacing schemes, on-line road improvement schemes, both with significant traffic management input, structural investigation and repair works and also rail infrastructure works, with both temporary and permanent structures adjacent to operational network rail infrastructure. Including:

  • Mersey Gateway - Technical Advisor to Mersey Gateway Crossings Board (MGCB)/CH2M and Core Team Highways Lead Technical Advisor and Project Team Scheme Consultant. Responsible for:
    • The review and management of highways and highways related design submissions and Departure from Standard Applications relating to highway geometry and highway details.
    • Site Assurance and Site Monitoring duties undertaken on behalf of the MGCB as well as the provision of general technical advice.
    • Managing the Ramboll contract with CH2M and any arising additional works through the NEC Professional Services Contract.
  • Highways Agency Area 10 - Ramboll Project Manager for all works assisting Balfour Beatty Mott MacDonald JV BBMM. Under an NEC Professional Services Contract, Ramboll assisted BBMM in preparing designs for maintenance schemes across the Area 10 network including pavement, VRS, drainage and structures works.
  • A477 St Clears to Red Roses Improvements - Design Team Project Manager for the construction phase of the works for 8.7km of off-line carriageway, 0.8km of online improvements and de-trunking of the existing A477 between Llanddowror and Red Roses.
  • A487 Glandyfi Improvement - Project Manager and Employers Agent Supervisor for £16m highways improvement at Glandyfi.
  • Wrexham Industrial Estate Access Road - Design Team Assistant Project Manager/Designers Site Representative
  • River Usk Bridge Re-grounding Works - Project Manager
  • Kronospan Rail Sidings- Design Team Project Manager & Employers Supervisor for the construction phase
  • A470 Blaenau Ffestiniog to Cancoed Improvement- Assistant Designers Site Representative
  • Central Park Redevelopment, Manchester – Contractors Senior Engineer

Recent projects

The Mersey Gateway

It is a new six-lane cable-stayed tolled bridge across the Mersey Estuary between Runcorn and Widnes. The central feature of the significant highway improvements between the M56 and Speke Road. 

A477 St Clears to Red Roses road improvement scheme

The A477 road forms part of the Trans European Road Network (TERN), a strategic route linking mainland Europe with West Wales and Ireland. Ramboll was appointed transport and environmental consultant in an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) form of contract to design and deliver a £47m improvement scheme.

A487 Bangor to Fishguard Trunk Road Improvement at Glandyfi

Glandyfi Junction on the A487 coastal trunk road runs through one of Wales’ most scenic areas, but its narrow bends made it a notorious bottleneck and accident blackspot. This improvement scheme involved widening and straightening a 1.3km stretch of the road beside the Afon Dyfi estuary, close to the Snowdonia National Park.
