Ramboll recently took centre stage at the World Cities Summit. The main theme for the event is “Liveable and Sustainable - Common Challenges, Shared Solutions”, and topical issues such as public governance and sustainable urban development were explored.

As a platinum sponsor at the Summit – which brought together over 3000 business leaders, industry experts, and mayors from the world’s top cities – Ramboll enjoyed a significant presence in the exhibition area. The stand represented all aspects of Ramboll’s city competencies, spanning urban planning, buildings, transport, blue/green solutions, waste management, energy, governance and socio-economics.

Culture at the heart of liveability

Group CEO, Jens-Peter Saul, chaired a round table discussion on the subject of “Sustainable Environment: Water and Waste Management,” and gave a high profile speech on building resilient cities. As part of his speech, “Culture at the Heart of Liveability,” Jens-Peter Saul defined liveability as the function of three main parameters of a city’s make up:

  1. Physical conditions: infrastructure, water, minerals, material, mobility, energy, food, etc.
  2. Social conditions: welfare and social services, safety and flexible labour market, good governance
  3. Cultural conditions: societal values, education and identity, and the specific character of a city.

He cited Ramboll’s involvement in the urban planning of Jeddah and the arctic city of Hammerfest as strong examples of how adapting to cultural differences achieves truly sustainable solutions.
