£35m Magherafelt bypass opens ahead of schedule

12 October 2016
The A31 Magherafelt Bypass was officially opened to the public several weeks ahead of schedule. It is the first of two projects (A31 and A26) to be completed for Transport Northern Ireland by a delivery team with Ramboll as the lead Designer for the Contractor.

The ribbon cutting took place close to Structure 17 Overbridge (a bridge designed by Ramboll’s office in Delhi, and managed by the Southampton Bridges Team). The photo shows from left: Conor Loughery, Transport NI Western Divisional Manager; Francie Molloy, MP for Mid Ulster; Chris Hazzard, Infrastructure Minister; Trevor Wilson, Chair of Mid Ulster Council.

There was then a short reception at a nearby hotel where the Minister and Contractors Project Director made short speeches commenting on the project being opened ahead of schedule and congratulating the entire supply chain.

Employed as Contractor’s Designer by BAM McCann JV, the scope of Ramboll’s involvement included management of the delivery of the detailed design and approvals, the detailed design of all highways, structures and geotechnical solutions, environmental design and co-ordination (including landscape design and assessment of alternative designs) and site supervision.

Innovation was brought to the detailed design by optimising the vertical alignment, side slopes and earthworks balance in order to reduce earthmoving and increase sustainability. Additional geotechnical testing resulted in justification of parameters to steepen side slopes.

Ramboll design teams in Southampton (UK) and Delhi (India) developed advanced parametric tools that greatly reduced the time and cost to Ramboll of designing structures of different geometry but of the same structural form.

Midway through the design period, Transport NI proposed changing the strategy for and locations of overtaking lanes – this represented a major change but Ramboll was able to manage the change and incorporate it with no resulting delay to the construction programme.

Overall 26 structures were designed by Ramboll, working in close collaboration with the main contractor and his sub-contractors to optimise buildability and incorporate preferred structural details into the works.

The bypass represents an investment of £35million by Transport Northern Ireland.

The new bypass on the A31 loops around the town of Magherafelt in Northern Ireland, and is expected to ease congestion in the town by as many as 50,000 vehicles a week, reducing journey times on a major route. Ramboll contributed highway, structures and geotechnical design, environmental co-ordination (including landscape design and assessment of alternative designs) and site supervision.
