Ramboll's unique use of indicator-derived evaluation tools confirmed the feasibility of using innovative techniques to identify functional solutions to existing operational and scheduling challenges of Finland’s busiest and most important railway yard. As the Finnish rail network is sparser than most of the rail networks in Europe and mostly comprised of single-track lines, many commonly known methods used to evaluate rail capacity and timetables require special calibration or modifications to more accurately describe local conditions.
This study employed specifically-developed indicators to plan the layout and operations of railway traffic in Helsinki, which is heavily affected by challenging localized conditions. The use of customized indicator analytics and verification of initial results via microscopic simulation methods, particularly at the Central Railway Station yard, enabled Ramboll to provide an effective impact evaluation for several track layout variants. Evaluation criteria included rail capacity, adherence to schedule, and traffic functionality within the railway yard. The study provided agency officials with clear, quantitative evaluation materials to identify the most preferable configurations and scheduling improvements.
