The revival of the Western Docks is the Port of Dover’s flagship development project. It is an essential regeneration of infrastructure for national and local economic prosperity, helping to increase long-term capacity for Europe’s busiest ferry port and much needed high quality employment opportunities for local people.

Plans for the Dover Western Docks Revival (DWDR) will see a transformed waterfront and the transfer of cargo operations to a new cargo terminal at the Western Docks. The £230m marine structures and bridge contract is the single biggest investment ever undertaken by the Port and Ramboll has been appointed as designer for the marine civil engineering stage.

The vision for Dover Western Docks Revival (DWDR)

This major marine civils project will see the transfer of cargo operations to a new cargo terminal with two container berths and a new distribution center, which will provide Dover with the long-term capacity to become a key international gateway handling trade to the value of £119bn representing up to 17% of UK trade in goods.

The relocation of cargo operations will create greater space within the Eastern Docks for ferry traffic.

DWDR will create over 1km of new quay walls, a new 200 berth marina and a new 550m long promenading pier. This will become a new waterfront leisure destination featuring Dover's unique backdrop of the harbour, cliffs and castle with shops, bars cafes, restaurants.

Ramboll’s involvement

VSBW (a joint venture between VolkerStevin and Boskalis Westminster) is the main contractor for the marine civil engineering stage and appointed Ramboll as designer.

Nick Clarke, Director for Ports at Ramboll UK, said: “We are looking forward to working in collaboration with the Port of Dover team to develop the optimum design solutions for the key infrastructure elements of the Dover Western Docks Revival.”

This first stage includes the design and construction of two new berths including quay walls and land reclamation as well as a new marina pier, the marina curve, navigation channel and new lock gates, bascule bridge and capital dredging work.

The scope of design work also includes design of revetments and land reclamation and independent checking of the design of other new structures forming part of the overall project. Construction work is due for completion by the end of 2018.

The Walking Piling Gate innovation

The time-lapse video below shows the 'walking piling gate' developed by the Volker Stevin site civil engineering team to install large diameter tubular piles for the port’s new berths, pier and marina curve. The custom-built frame has led to noticeable safety and efficiency improvements due to minimising manual handling and the reduction in time spent positioning each gate template.

The equipment, the first of its kind, has been recognized as an innovation by the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) and is featured on the Scheme’s Best Practice Hub.

Prior to the creation of the walking gate, the site anticipated driving 2.5 units per day but the use of the piling frame has streamlined the cycle time for placing successive piles and now easily achieves 4-6 units a day.
