Helsinki gets a grip on the future of urban transport

Rapid changes driven by global trends, such as climate change, digitalisation and demographics, have a massive impact on our transport systems. In Helsinki, a workgroup compiled an analysis of megatrends and their impacts on the City’s transport system. The result was a package of recommendations for the strategic development of the City’s future transport system. Ramboll assisted with consultancy work and facilitation of workshops.

Guidance on traffic safety for urban planners

Three Quays

The Cheval Group’s Three Quays project is located in a prime position, on a heavily constrained Thames waterfront site, between the Tower of London and Sugar Quay. The mixed use development offers private and serviced apartments over nine floors, retail accommodation at ground level, and plant, servicing facilities and some parking in the basement. In addition to providing structural engineering for the new concrete frame building, our engineers provided transport consultancy.Originally occupied by three Victorian buildings, the site is within an area of known archaeological interest. Findings proved richer than anticipated and took six months to process. They also resulted in alterations to the foundation design to avoid a Roman wall. Danderyd Hospital

The patient capacity of Danderyd Hospital needs to be expanded and the hospital is being rebuilt and equipped with a new emergency room. Ramboll handles extensive commissions in the project.

Norway's largest transport project prepares Oslo for future growth

The 23 km Follo Line railway will connect Oslo to the commuter city of Ski. Currently the largest transport project in Norway, it features Norway's longest railway tunnel (19 km) to allow much faster and more frequent trains to Oslo from the south.

Expert rail services for development of the LIIKE system

The LIIKE system is used to control track capacity in an environment consisting of several railway companies. Ramboll has been participating in the development of the system since 2006.

Development vision for rail services in Southern Finland (ESSI)

Railway traffic in southern Finland has been handled earlier in system level reports and more specifically divided subject-specific reports.  There is a need to specify railway traffic as a whole, as well as requirements for infrastructure investment with respect to traffic characteristics (increased traffic, demand forecasts and land usage). ESSI is a visioning exercise for future rail demands in southern Finland.

Nørreport Traffic

This project consists of a detailed road and traffic management design, for a new traffic solution at Nørreport Station - including a new bus station.

A477 St Clears to Red Roses road improvement scheme

The A477 road forms part of the Trans European Road Network (TERN), a strategic route linking mainland Europe with West Wales and Ireland. Ramboll was appointed transport and environmental consultant in an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) form of contract to design and deliver a £47m improvement scheme.

Limerick PPP Scheme

The Limerick PPP Scheme (Public Private Partnership) includes a fourth crossing of the River Shannon linking the northern bank with the southern bank at Bunlicky Lake.

Fujairah 2040 Framework Plan

Under the leadership of the Ruler of Fujairah H.H. Sheikh Hamad Bin Mohammed Al Sharqi and Crown Prince H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Hamad Al Sharqi, Fujairah Municipality initiated the development of a strategic Framework Plan for the Emirate of Fujairah, one of seven Emirates making up the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Ramboll was commissioned by Fujairah Municipality to develop Fujairah’s Framework Plan through a multi-disciplinary approach.

The Blue-Green Garden City

Denmark’s largest current climate adaption project, the "Blue-Green Garden City" in the town of Kokkedal, north of Copenhagen, will improve local residents' everyday life; environmentally, socially and culturally.

Nordhavn Metro Extension

Ramboll, in a joint venture with Arup and with architectural firm COBE as sub-consultant, is the planning advisor for the Nordhavnen Metro extension in central Copenhagen.

Super Bike Paths increase capacity and flow

In Copenhagen, one of the world’s leading cities for cycling, congestion is not confined to the road system. A range of new Super Bike Path solutions includes green waves, fast lanes and virtual traffic islands to increase capacity and flow on bike paths.

Bicycle paths in Copenhagen

The project is part of the Copenhagen Bicycle Policy, which aims at improving conditions for cyclists in city centre. Ramboll is involved in the planning and establishment of new bicycle paths in and around the historical urban core. The project is executed with a special focus on the integration of bicycle traffic with the historical city centre and the urban environment.

Meridian Water masterplan

The Meridian Water project is one of the largest housing developments in London and the UK and will see up to 10,000 homes constructed over the next 20 years on an 85 hectare brownfield site.

Södra Länken

The aim of the project was to design a road traffic tunnel system at Stockholm’s southern suburbs in order to reduce traffic congestion, direct traffic around Stockholm and enhance environmental condition.

Tunbridge Wells Hospital

Construction of the Tunbridge Wells Hospital in Pembury made possible the consolidation of Pembury and Kent & Sussex Hospitals into one single location. Built on the site of Pembury hospital, it includes 512 bedrooms and was the first NHS acute hospital in Britain to have single room wards.

Planning and Implementing Sustainable Transport in Addis Ababa

The objective of the Strategic Comprehensive Transport Development Plan (SCTPD) for Addis Ababa commissioned by AACRA is to appropriately address the transport and mobility challenges identified in Addis, by proposing and planning the implementation of new transport strategies and projects for the city, that are feasible from economic, financial, technical and environmental viewpoints and embraced by the involved authorities and the public.

Queensferry Crossing

The Queensferry Crossing sits within a beautiful bridge-scape representing three centuries of bridge innovation. It is the UK’s tallest bridge and the world’s longest three-tower, cable-stayed bridge.

Gateway Asia 2030: Feasibility study for new major airport and seaport project, Manila

Ramboll has performed a feasibility study for a combined new Sangley Airport and Seaport Project in Manila, Philippines, envisaged as the new gateway to Manila and the Philippines.

Campus North development

Tying together the University of Copenhagen's various faculties, research facilities and laboratories as well as improving integration with the city and businesses in the area is the aim for the development of the Campus North area.

Emirates Advanced Investments Group (EAIG) Headquarters

Ormiston Academies Trust aiming for zero carbon emissions

Ramboll is working with the contractor Balfour Beatty, under a design & build contract, to deliver five school projects in the UK counties of Essex and Norfolk.

Implementing improved cargo handling facilities in IWT terminals in Bangladesh

The overall goal of the project was planning and construction of two new IWT cargo terminals. Ramboll in association with partners in Bangladesh, have performed a feasibility study and detailed design of 2 new IWT cargo terminals in Pangaon and Ashuganj. In both locations new berthing facilities and improved cargo handling facilities will be implemented. 

E18 motorway extension from Koskenkylä to Kotka in Finland

Within Finland, Sweden and Norway in particular, Ramboll has been extensively involved in the establishment of the Nordic Triangle transport corridor, part of EU’s TEN-T road network, linking this region closer to the rest of Europe and beyond. As a part of the Nordic Triangle transport corridor, the E18 stretches all the way across southern Finland from Turku via the Helsinki metropolitan area to Vaalimaa at the Russian border providing a fast route to Eastern markets. Leading the consulting consortium in charge of construction design, Ramboll plays a central role in the E18 motorway extension from Koskenkylä to Kotka.

Akbulak Club Resort

Akbulak Club Resort is a luxury leisure complex resort located in the south east of Kazakhstan, approximately 50km east of the former capital Almaty. The proposed development is laid over 980 hectares on a greenfield site, located at the foothills of the Tian Shan mountain range, which separates Kazakhstan and China. Assessments, provided by Ramboll, included information that could be used to forecast costs, enabling our client to consider possible phasing options.

Preparing the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan for Tbilisi

This study is intended to prepare a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) for the Tbilisi metropolitan area. The SUMP aims at the creation of effective and inclusive transport system ensuring equal accessibility and sustainable mobility to and within the city.

Helix-London development

Two elliptical residential towers of different heights sit above a two storey podium in this mixed use development in London's Canary Wharf. One of Europe's largest McDonald's restaurants has been demolished to make way for it.The concrete frame towers, one 28 storeys high and the other 35 storeys, are linked by spaghetti-like steel bridges. Each floor has a wrap-around balcony with views to the nearby marina. CityLife Milan technical reviews

The 43 hectare CityLife development occupies the site of Milan’s former fairground and exhibition site (Fiera Campionaria). Its combination of residences, offices, retail space and public facilities are arrayed around a large park — Europe’s biggest privately funded park development. We worked in collaboration with J&A Consultants on technical reviews of the architects’ schemes. Our combined refinements and suggestions produced savings sufficient to cover our fees five times over.

Black Sea Hotel and residences

A Soviet-era tower block has been demolished to make way for a 23-storey five-star hotel and 14-storey apartment building linked by a two-storey podium in the historic port city of Batumi on the Black Sea coast of Georgia. We are providing a one-stop design and project management service for this fast-track development. Architect RTKL is acting as a sub-consultant to Ramboll. The design is contemporary but influenced by traditional Georgia. Features include an old-town style boulevard of two-storey shops and restaurants that runs along the seafront and through the new complex. Lawns and gardens cover the top of the podium to create an energy efficient green roof. Solar panels have also been installed on the podium and on the roof.

Doha Marina Mall, Qatar

Marina Mall is a 180,000 sqm retail and leisure facility in the Lusail development on the east coast of Qatar. The mall includes over 70,000 sqm leasable retail over three main levels, as well as a hypermarket within the basement. It will also house cinemas, family entertainment centre, restaurants with terraces overlooking the marina and spa facilities.

E18 Grimstad - Kristiansand, European Highway

Ramboll was engaged as the main consultant on the stretch of the new E18 motorway between Grimstad and Kristiansand. The new motorway will significantly improve the Norwegian infrastructure and will improve living conditions for local communities living along the existing road.

Gullbergsvass and Gothenburg’s new RiverCity

Gullbergsvass is one of seven neighbourhoods in central Gothenburg’s port area to be transformed into the attractive new ‘RiverCity’. Ramboll performed a feasibility study for the 90 hectare district as a basis for stakeholder dialogue on the development. RiverCity promises to position Gothenburg as one of the top five cities in Europe for growth potential.

Modernisation of Swedish hospitals

The upgrading of healthcare facilities in Sörmland, Sweden includes the refurbishment and extensions of hospitals in three cities.

Khalifa University Extension Phase 1

The Khalifa University Extension Phase 1 Project will add an additional area of 120,000 sqm to the existing 34,500 sqm of the current campus.  Ramboll provided multidisciplinary services for extension.

Tunnel under Marselis Boulevard

The project consists of a 1.8 kilometre cut and cover tunnel, consisting of mechanical and electrical  installations, several road and railway bridges (including railway bridges at Langenæs, Åhavevej and Viby Ringgade), and all temporary structures.

The Mersey Gateway

It is a new six-lane cable-stayed tolled bridge across the Mersey Estuary between Runcorn and Widnes. The central feature of the significant highway improvements between the M56 and Speke Road.

Elsinore Harbour is the home of a new subterranean maritime museum. Ramboll has made the subterranean museum possible, with its innovative solutions and cross-disciplinary collaborations.

The Makers District, UAE

Will become one of Abu Dhabi’s most iconic and vibrant residential communities. The team were challenged to construct a development that excels in liveability, cost-efficiency and simultaneously corresponds to the Estidama sustainability initiative. The first phase comprises of 13 different buildings ranging from mid to 24 storey high rise and a built-up area of circa 390,000 sqm    

The Øresund Link

The Øresund Link connects the Danish capital Copenhagen with the city of Malmö in southern Sweden by a four lane motorway and a two track electrified railway for high speed (200 km/h) passenger services as well as freight trains.

New Northzealand Hospital

The one of a kind new Northzealand hospital in Hillerød, Denmark seeks to reinvent hospital designs for the future. Following a 12-month intensive international design competition, the Architectural consortium of Herzog & de Meuron/Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter was awarded the contract, with Ramboll named as the engineering consultant, providing a full range of engineering services.

Nordhavnsvej – the largest road construction project in Copenhagen in 50 years

The project for “Nordhavnsvej” is the first stage of a new road to Copenhagen’s Nordhavn (North Harbour). When fully developed, the urban area is planned for 40,000 residents and 40,000 workplaces.
