Repoint – Railway point innovation

Repoint is an electromechanical device designed to improve the reliability of the points in the railway network where trains transfer from one line to another. Based on fault tolerant engineering principles, it is an alternative to conventional track switches. It has the potential to reduce track maintenance costs and increase capacity on rail networks in the UK and around the world by reducing disruption to train traffic at signals and points. Ramboll supported the development with all aspects of signalling design, from lab-tests to full scale demonstration.

High-speed rail between Gothenburg and Borås in Sweden

Ramboll has been commissioned by the Swedish Transport Administration to investigate the route for the high-speed tracks between Gothenburg - Borås and two stations in Mölndal and Landvetter airport.

The Copenhagen Metro

It was a groundbreaking event when the Copenhagen Metro opened its first fully automated, driverless metro in 2002. Since then, it has become the most natural thing in the world for the citizens of Copenhagen to travel at speeds of 80km/h 18 metres below street level.

Operational and strategic guidebook for disturbances

Disruptions in railway operations due to weather, infrastructure failures, or other unexpected incidents must be anticipated by railway operators. Reaction and reporting procedures are important to consistent and reliable oeprations; however, communications to passengers have not necessarily been a priority in many systems.

Railway Tunnel Ådalsbanan

The Ådalsbanan Railroad runs along the coastside in the north of Sweden and is the link between Botniabanan and Ostkustbanan. It consist of 180 km railroad, 14 bridges and 14 km rock tunnels. The stretch goes between Sundsvall and Nyland.

Directing of tracks into Oslo S

The Norwegian Rail Administration (JBV) selected Ramboll for the task to make analyses of the capacity of a future Oslo Central Station (Oslo S), having new lines from different directions into the station. This was a simulation of a future situation with, among other features, a completed Follo line (from south-west, designed by Rambøll) and totally four tracks in tunnel (only two today) from the west into Oslo S.

Ring Rail Line – Independent Safety Assessment of CCS

Ring Rail Line (Kehärata in Finnish) is a railway route in the area of the Vantaa city, Helsinki Metropolitan Area of Finland. It connects Helsinki-Vantaa Airport and the adjacent Aviapolis business and retail district to the Helsinki commuter railway network.  The line started operating on 1 July 2015. 

InterCity Railway Moss

Double railway track from Sandbukta north of the city of Moss, to Såstad in Rygge municipality, South of Moss. This section has a total length of approximately 10 km and includes a tunnel under Moss city centre and through Carlberget. A new station will be established in the city of Moss. The project consists of more than 30 different disciplines, including RAMS. Ramboll Sweco ANS is responsible for the complete RAMS process according to EN 50126.

Reading Station area redevelopment works

The six-phased redevelopment plan for Reading Station was a hugely ambitious scheme to decongest the busy rail hub. Of the two packages of work released by Network Rail, Ramboll won contracts on both.

ERTMS across borders

Ramboll has been appointed by RB Rail AB to conduct a feasibility study of the control-command and signalling subsystems procurement and deployment strategy as a preparation for implementing ERTMS on the double track railway line on the route from Tallinn, Riga (LV), and Kaunas (LT) to the Poland border.

Docklands Light Railway upgrade and expansion works

The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) in London's East End underwent major works to upgrade and expand the network, enabling it to carry three-car (six coach) trains. Working in conjunction with Arup, we provided rail engineering services for the detailed design of stations and supporting structures. Taylor Woodrow was awarded the design & build contract for this part of the project, officially known as Provision of Three Car Enhancement Works.At project tender stage, we provided full design support including the development of a number of innovative procedures for minimising the strengthening of structures. Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal (DIRFT) - expansion project

A modern and advanced rail freight terminal was required for the third expansion of the Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal. Moving freight by rail rather than road produces 3.4 times less CO2 per tonne-km and 70% less carbon emissions according to Department for Transport, UK, “Delivering a Sustainable Transport System”, The Logistics Perspective (December 2008).

Railroad project to increase speed and capacity in Trondheim

The diverse project scope includes new signal and security works, construction of a bridge, a new station platform and upgrading of technical systems. The project will serve to create better conditions for people as well as commercial-life in the region. Trains will leave more often and journey times will be reduced. The main objective is a 100 percent increase in goods transport within the year 2020, which will help boost commercial activity and stimulate employment.

Caversham Road rail bridge replacement

Our rail specialists designed a major rail bridge in Berkshire for BAM Nuttall and Network Rail as part of the six-year phased redevelopment of Reading Station and the surrounding rail network.

Vejle Fjord - new shortcut secures faster travel time

The planning of the rail projects to realise the Danish Hour Model is in full swing. At Vejle Fjord in Denmark, studies are to ensure shorter travel times on the rail section between Odense and Aarhus.

Thameslink: Bermondsey Dive Under

Rebuilding a vital section of the Thameslink rail line at Bermondsey Dive Under included track and infrastructure work, with sustainability and urban regeneration aspects. Value engineering and detailed design by Ramboll, in collaboration with main contractor, Skanska, and Network Rail, delivered significant cost benefits.

New Danish rail signalling system

Together with an international consortium, Ramboll is renewing the entire signalling system in Denmark in one of the largest domestic rail projects ever.

Demands for operational reliability and lower maintenance costs give rise to many upgrade and renewal projects.

Extension of Copenhagen metropolitan railway section

The Project concerns central parts of the Copenhagen Suburban Mass Transit lines between Copenhagen Central Station and Valby. In connection with the construction of the Køge Bugt line, the northbound track (5th main track) was lead all the way to the platform on Copenhagen Central Station, while the corresponding southbound track (6th main track) was not established.

Assessor for Odense Tramway Transportation System

In Odense, the third largest city in Denmark, a new tramway line is to be built. Ramboll is the independent assessor for the Transportation System.

Norwegian ERTMS National Implementation - Framework agreement Technical consultants

The Rambøll Consortium is technical consultant to the ERTMS national implementation project in Norway. The project scope is installation on ERTMS in trains, trackside and procurement of a new Traffic Management System (TMS/CTC).

Norway's largest transport project prepares Oslo for future growth

The 23 km Follo Line railway will connect Oslo to the commuter city of Ski. Currently the largest transport project in Norway, it features Norway's longest railway tunnel (19 km) to allow much faster and more frequent trains to Oslo from the south.

Expert rail services for development of the LIIKE system

The LIIKE system is used to control track capacity in an environment consisting of several railway companies. Ramboll has been participating in the development of the system since 2006.

Development vision for rail services in Southern Finland (ESSI)

Railway traffic in southern Finland has been handled earlier in system level reports and more specifically divided subject-specific reports.  There is a need to specify railway traffic as a whole, as well as requirements for infrastructure investment with respect to traffic characteristics (increased traffic, demand forecasts and land usage). ESSI is a visioning exercise for future rail demands in southern Finland.

Feasibility study of the Helsinki Central Railway Station

Ramboll's unique use of indicator-derived evaluation tools confirmed the feasibility of using innovative techniques to identify functional solutions to existing operational and scheduling challenges of Finland’s busiest and most important railway yard.

Arnside Viaduct deck and rail replacement

Built in 1856 — and rebuilt in 1915 — the 51-span Arnside Viaduct carries the Carnforth to Whitehaven railway over the River Kent estuary at a point close to Morecambe Bay. Its deck had suffered considerable deterioration and Network Rail decided to replace it. Our transport engineers undertook a Grip Stage 5 (Form B) design for the superstructure, working closely with contractor May Gurney.

A380 South Devon Highway

The South Devon Link Road Project was one of the biggest construction projects and one of the most complex highways schemes in the South West. Involving many partners and engineering challenges, the project has received awards for considerate practices that show respect to the community and the environment.

A23/A232 Fiveways Croydon - Stage 3 - Concept Design

The ‘Fiveways’ scheme in Croydon aims to tackle congestion at the A23/A232 junction and surrounding network, improving it for all road users. It includes the Purley Way interchange, Fiveways Corner junction, and Waddon Station Bridge, and is important for the borough’s economic growth.

ETCS fitting of the Danish train fleet

Large rail project alleviates Norway's urban pressure

Passing through and under the city of Moss, the coming Sandbukta-Moss-Såstad rail link south of Oslo calls for complex rail engineering skills. The project involves the design of double-track rail tunnels in hilly terrain and a modern rail station in the bustling city of Moss.

Digital railway programme in the UK – Signaling and ERTMS Services

Delivering the foundations for Network Rail’s Digital Railway programme will help realise significant network wide benefits for the railway by improving safety and punctuality, helping to maximise capacity, enhancing the customer experience and supporting future economic growth.

Carlsberg Station: Assessment of Safety

With 12,000 expected passengers per day, the future Carlsberg Station will become the gateway to the new urban area called ”Carlsberg Byen”. Ramboll is in charge of the assessment of the rail safety of this busy station.

Langdon Park Station, Docklands Light Railway

A new three-car DLR station built on-line around the existing Stratford line between All Saints and Devon's Road station, Langdon Park is central to regeneration plans for the area and was substantially funded by regional development monies. Ramboll acted as lead consultant for Costain, who carried out the project under a design & build contract.

Tennison Road Bridge - over rail replacement

With technology and engineering expertise we were able to launch a much improved bridge for Croydon over 10 operational rail lines while keep trains running and passengers travelling.

Building project implementation capacities and skills of Metrorex

The overall objective was to assist the European Investment Bank (EIB) in their support to the Bucharest Metro Company (Metrorex SA), with an emphasis on the project management, including preparation, procurement and implementation of projects. METROREX intended to create a Project Management Unit (PMU) that could support all the Project Implementation units (one per main project) within the organisation. Ramboll assisted the PMU with: Project Preparation and Implementation as well as Procurement.

Train Protection Enhancement Programme - Richmond Station

Richmond station features Transport for London (TfL) District line and Overground trains alongside each other on adjacent platforms. This DEG Signal Ltd project assessed options for the fitment of alternative train protection systems at the station. This will offer TfL full operational flexibility for their Overground fleet across London's suburban rail network.

Chapel Street bridge replacement

Chapel Street Bridge is a vital component in Network Rail’s £1bn Northern Hub infrastructure upgrade project, which includes Ordsall Chord. It is also a key part of Central Salford Urban Regeneration scheme.

London Underground deep tube programme, Piccadilly Line surveys

Ramboll specialists were commissioned to undertake detailed laser scanning surveys of 52 of the 53 stations on the Piccadilly Line, one of London Underground’s major arteries.

Tynemouth Railway Station

Grade II* listed Tynemouth Railway Station has undergone extensive refurbishment to preserve its elegant canopy roof and enable its redevelopment as a community venue.

Lights on at new large Baltic port

The Port of Helsinki officially opened the new cargo port at Vuosaari, Helsinki on 28 November 2008, which Ramboll helped realise. Finland’s new main port offers efficient transport with frequent shipping services to Central European ports as well as direct connections to the entire Finnish main road and railway network.

Power Road Bridge Replacement

TfL is replacing the three span Power Road Bridge, which carries the A406 North Circular Road (Gunnersbury Avenue) over two Network Rail lines. This complex project involves diversion of utilities onto a new service bridge, and highway bridge deck demolition and replacement works without the need for road closure.

TfL Structures and Tunnels Investment Portfolio (STIP)

The London 2012 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games was Britain's largest peacetime logistical exercise and a major challenge for Transport for London (TfL). London's road network had suffered decades of under-investment preceding TfL’s ownership, and the highest priority structures had to be in a state of good repair before the Games began.

Highbury Corner Bridge STIP

Highbury Corner bridge in central London was one of the eight highest priority structures on Transport for London’s (TfL) road network that were identified as needing intervention and investment. It had to be replaced to reduce the need for disruptive emergency closures in the future. Despite unusual complexities and constraints, full deck replacement took place with only a 20-day road closure and a 195hr rail possession.

Singapore Rail pedestrian modelling

Ramboll Smart Mobility conducted pedestrian modelling and transport planning and design services for the new Singapore-Kuala Lumpur High Speed Rail (HSR) terminus in Jurong East

York Engineers’ Triangle Rail Operating and Training Centre

York Engineers' Triangle is the UK's largest rail operating centre and was built above the well-preserved foundations of three roundhouse and a Victorian engine shed. Ramboll archaeologists and structural engineers preserved 95% of the archaeological remains.

A605 Kings Dyke Improvement Scheme

The problem of road congestion on the A605 road, resulting from increased rail traffic through the Kings Dyke level crossing, needed an ambitious diversion scheme that involved a new road and bridge, rail works, ground works and landscaping.

THE WEST LINK UNITES GOTHENBURG

The population in Western part of Sweden is growing and capacity problems on the railways in and around Gothenburg are increasing.

Track upgrade

The line between Aarhus and Hobro in Jutland, Denmark is being upgraded in preparation for high speed trains. This will help reduce travel time between Aalborg in the country’s north and Aarhus to one hour.

Intercity Sørli-Hamar-Lillehammer

In order to improve the connection between Sørli and Lillehammer in Norway, Ramboll is planning a new 70-kilometre double track railway line.

Upper Holloway - road-over-rail bridge replacement (STIP)

The road bridge carrying the A1 Holloway Road over the railway line at Upper Holloway station has been replaced. The £25m rebuild project is part of a Transport for London (TfL) scheme to improve London's roads and public spaces. It has been challenging and complex from feasibility to implementation.

Doha Metro Green Line Underground

As part of an ambitious plan to develop a railway based public transport in Doha, Qatar Railways Rail appointed a Joint Venture comprising PORR, the Saudi Binladin Group and HBK Contracting for the design and construction of Green Line Underground.

Holmestrand - The world’s first mountain railway station

A new fourteen kilometers double track through the city of Holmestrand will greatly improve the rail services on the Vestfold line. Rambøll is responsible for the design of seven kilometers of the line and Holmestrand Statio

Paddington Elizabeth line station

The new Paddington station serves the new Elizabeth line railway (formerly known as Crossrail) which increases capacity at this major London interchange and across the network by 200m passengers a year. The Ramboll team played an integral role in the design and delivery of the entrance canopy, façades, cladding, conservation and public realm, working extensively with stakeholders to overcome the highly complex challenges of this landmark station.

Custom House Station

Custom House Station is one of the 10 new stations in London for the Elizabeth line that was opened on the 24 May 2022. It is the only above-ground station on the line, which is positioned on a tightly constrained site. The new station is predominantly constructed in pre-cast concrete elements, where Ramboll supported the design in enhancing its buildability and project managed the contractor's design team, overseeing 12 separate design disciplines.

The Stockholm City Line: Efficient travel across the city

Ramboll is giving expert advice in how to build a railway tunnel, and how to improve the punctuality and the frequency of future rail traffic in Stockholm.

Upgrading of the Ringsted-Fehmarn Railway Line

As part of the Fehmarn Belt tunnel project, the 110 km railway line between Ringsted and the Fehmarn-link in Rødby will undergo a comprehensive upgrade. The project includes raising the speed limit to 200 km/h and expansion from single to double track between Vordingborg and Rødby. Existing railway stations will be rebuilt and a new station will be built in Holeby. All of this in order to ensure a quick and efficient transportation of cargo and passengers to Germany.

The Øresund Link

The Øresund Link connects the Danish capital Copenhagen with the city of Malmö in southern Sweden by a four lane motorway and a two track electrified railway for high speed (200 km/h) passenger services as well as freight trains.

In the future Scandinavia and the rest of Europe will be connected by the world's longest road and rail tunnel.

Nordhavnsvej – the largest road construction project in Copenhagen in 50 years

The project for “Nordhavnsvej” is the first stage of a new road to Copenhagen’s Nordhavn (North Harbour). When fully developed, the urban area is planned for 40,000 residents and 40,000 workplaces.
