Structural & civil engineering

Structural engineering is a key discipline in both new and retrofit design work whether onshore, offshore or subsea. The calculation of adequate structural capacity is a necessary safety measure to prevent overutilisation and requires advanced software analysis tools and specialist structural engineering expertise.

Structural engineering pedigree

Ramboll has extensive knowledge and experience with the design, analysis and assessment of structures for the petroleum industry. We design solutions for onshore installations, terminals and pipelines as well as offshore production facilities and subsea pipelines.

We provide cost-effective structural design solutions focused on constructability, safety, and ease of installation.

Our structural and civil engineering services cover:

  • Structural analysis, advanced FEM analyses and hazard engineering
  • Dynamic impact/pushover analyses and wave in deck load scenarios for offshore structures
  • Vibration and noise assessments
  • Structural integrity management incl. reassessments, weight monitoring, inspection planning, surveys and structural health monitoring systems (SHMS)
  • Geophysical and geotechnical engineering
  • Construction supervision and design verification
  • Offshore decommissioning

Structural integrity management and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM)

Our structural integrity management services cover a wide range of analyses that help clients safeguard their offshore asset throughout its entire lifetime.

Moreover we design advanced Structural Health Monitoring Systems (SHMS) which provide real-time information about all relevant changes in a structure. As a structure approaches the end of its design life, our SHM data combined with advanced fatigue analyses has the potential to generate significant cost savings as it establishes whether it is necessary to initiate structural reinforcement work.

Civil engineering expertise

Our civil engineering and structural engineering work for onshore production facilities includes design of concrete foundations as well as steel and concrete superstructures for a range of installations.

We employ intelligent 3D CAD systems for integrated plant layouts, modelling of facilities and design tasks.

Explosion analysis and hazard management

Explosions can be critical to both the asset and its personnel. Ramboll’s structural engineering specialists perform advanced explosion analyses to ensure sufficient structural capacity in all critical areas.

We apply our structural & civil engineering services for Offshore platforms, Floating production, Pipelines & subsea, Onshore production & refining, Terminals, storage and pipelines and Gas & LNG.

Map of the Caspian Sea and surroundings

The development of the Kuvykin field

Ramboll will contribute to the development of the Kuvykin field in the Russian sector of the Caspian Sea with pre-FEED studies for a drilling complex and topside living quarters designed for operation in arctic conditions.

Culzean field

Three jacket designs for the Culzean ultra-HP/HT field

The Culzean field was discovered in 2008 and is one of the largest fields in the British North Sea. Ramboll is providing detailed design of three jacket structures for the field, which has the potential to meet around 5 per cent of the UK’s gas demand in 2020/21.

Azurite Project - Drilling modules for the industry’s first FDPSO

History was made in August 2009 when Murphy West Africa Ltd. began producing the Azurite field offshore The Democratic Republic of Congo. Azurite uses the industry's first Floating, Drilling, Production, Storage and Offloading (DFPSO) vessel.

Banyu Urip production facility

Detailed design of early, onshore production facility at Banyu Urip

The Banyu Urip project involves the development of the major, Indonesian onshore oil field, Banyu Urip, operated by ExxonMobil's Mobil Cepu Ltd. The field is estimated to contain approximately 450 million barrels of oil.
