Natural gas storage and terminals

We have specialised in gas storage, and Ramboll has undertaken a significant number of large-scale gas storage projects from depleted oil/gas reservoirs to aquifer reservoirs and salt caverns. Our expertise also covers assessment of strategic gas storage requirements and development planning for storage facilities.

Moreover, our midstream experience also includes entire revamps of terminals and plants in operation. Our aim is to minimise down-time by integrating advanced techniques such as precision surveys and 3D scanning, which also serve to avoid geometrical flaws.

Onshore pipeline systems

Design of onshore pipelines systems, including compressor stations and MR stations, is part of our core competences. Pipeline system design requires careful planning to select the optimum pipeline route with regard to: overall length, right-of-way access, existing use of the land, population intensity and planning for existing infrastructure.

Integrated risk and safety services

Risk and safety form an integrated part of our consultancy services. We perform comprehensive risk analyses and safety screenings on pipelines as well as new and existing facilities to ensure that all safety and environmental regulations are met.

Norsea Gas Terminal in Emden, Germany

The Gassco Emden Project - Extensive revamp of vital onshore gas receiving terminal

After more than 30 years of operation, the Norsea Gas Terminal in Emden, Germany, needed to be refurbished to maintain safe and reliable gas transportation. The major scope of work included new receiving-, gas heating-, utilities- and process facilities. Ramboll carried out the FEED study proposing the technical solution.


Ras Laffan port expansion

Ramboll provided the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) for Phase 2 of the Ras Laffan Port Expansion Project.

Natural gas storage facility in Etzel, Northern Germany

The national gas markets in Europe are changing rapidly. Continuous liberalisation, dependency on gas imports from outside the EU, and increasing consumer demand have stepped up the need for strategic as well as commercial storage facilities. Ramboll has been deeply involved in these developments since the 1990s and in 2008 we assisted Etzel-Kavernenbetriebsgesellschaft mbH & CO. KG with the development of the Etzel salt cavern storage facility near Wilhelmshaven, Germany.

Halul Island, Quatar

Detailed design of crude oil import and export facilities at Halul Island

80 kilometres off the coast of Qatar, Halul Island is the base for 11 large crude oil storage tanks and pumping facilities, as well as power generation and water desalination plants. Ramboll was chosen to be part of plans to expand this complex, by carrying out a detailed design of the crude oil import and export terminal.

Underground gas storage at Ninotsminda gas capped oil field

Georgia has experienced a pressing desire to build an Underground Gas Storage (UGS) for the sake of security of natural gas supply within the country of Georgia. An underground gas storage offers the ability to accommodate seasonal and short-term fluctuations in the demand for natural gas.

Extension of underground gas storage facility, EIA, at Lille Torup

Energinet.dk planned an extension of their gas storage facility in Lille Torup. The facility comprises an underground gas storage in a salt cavern an a processing plant. Ramboll provided a number of environmental assessment services for the project.
